Town Facilities

The Store

On the right hand side as you enter Port Waikato, and adjacent the boat ramp and yacht club, is the local Port Waikato Wharf Store. The store can supply you with all your basic essentials, including fishing gear to catch your own supper. There is a post box and pay phone to keep you connected with the rest of the civilized world, and one lone petrol pump. No diesel.

The landing on which the store now sits was the site of the original port where fishermen, traders and ship builders had their dock yards. There are a number of interesting historic photographs from this era on display inside the store.

The Wharf Store is open pretty much seven-to-seven, seven days a week. And if you are up and ready to shop, it is often open even earlier!

Cell Phones

There is intermittent cell phone coverage at Port Waikato, which can actually be quite nice once in a while, right? At Port Waikato Top 10 Holiday Park we provide a Wi-Fi Hotspot zone so you can still stay in touch. However, if you need to contact someone the old fashioned way then there are public pay phones in front of the Wharf Store.

Dining

Short of being invited around for dinner by a friendly Port Waikato local - down the south end of Port Waikato at Sunset Beach is the town's one and only dining facility.

The Sunset Store serves up the conventional kiwi array of fish n' chips and burgers, plus cold drinks and icecreams to keep you chilled on those hot n' sandy summer afternoons at the beach.

Boat Ramp

Fancy a day on the Tasman Sea or a put around the estuary?

There is a boat ramp at the Port Waikato Yacht Club next to the Wharf Store.

For 4WD vehicles, beach access is available from the car park at Sunset Beach.

Surf Life Savers

For safe swimming, life guards patrol the beach during the summer weekends and throughout the week during the kids summer school holidays.

So swim safe and stay between the flags.

Other Community Facilities

A short walk fom the Pork Waikato Holiday Park is a community recreational area featuring a playground, two tennis courts, and a public library.

So grab a racqet and bash some balls about, or lie in the grass with a good book while the kids merrily play in the park.
